TASK 3 (Exploration)
Introduction
Task 3 -Final
After evaluating the design chosen in Task 2, I will need to create a
piece of design that is either inspired by or influenced by the one I
previously analyzed. Applying design principles is also necessary. To
communicate the visual message, I can use any materials or medium.
My selected United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) is number
14, focusing on LIFE BELOW WATER. Through my design, I aim to emphasize
the realities of life beneath the water's surface. I believe that through
my work, I can show more people the issues facing the oceans in reality,
as well as convey some ironic commentary on humanity
Visual Reference
My visual references for Task 3 all come from these drawings. These works allow me to vividly imagine the compositions in my mind. For instance, in the first sketch, I combined elements from the first and second photos. I incorporated the scene of a boat passing through into my sketch, replacing the fish in the image with fish made of garbage. Additionally, I changed the text in the image to reflect the 14th goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) that I selected in Task 1: "LIFE BELOW WATER." This transforms the entire composition, filling it with elements of pollution.
As for the second sketch, I utilized elements from the third and fourth drawings. I depicted marine animals being deformed due to human harm and desiring revenge against humanity by imprisoning humans in cages. The composition of the entire sketch was inspired by the artwork from the 8th World Rendering Competition - Eternal Ascent.
The third work employed elements from the first and second photos, transforming the lake surface into a mass of fish chased by fish made of garbage
Sketch 1.
Concept Idea
This is the 1st sketch for my task 3 of Design Principle. The conceptual idea of this artwork is the boatman in the picture sailing on a pitch-black sea. This sea once was so beautiful, full of colors. However, now, as the fishing boat passes by and clears away the surface dirt, people can see the colorful underwater world. The difference from the past is that the fish and turtles are no longer what they used to be; they have been replaced by creatures formed from garbage. The guardians of the ocean world - the fish, coral, and turtles - must now survive under the protection of "bubbles."
Sketch 2.
Concept Idea
This idea comes from the 8th World Rendering Competition - Eternal Ascent. The artwork represents humanity reaping what it has sown. The background depicts a sea floor littered with garbage, with a fish entangled in trash. Humans are depicted trapped in a cage by underwater creatures as a punishment for their selfish actions, which have led to the destruction of the underwater environment. Ultimately, it portrays the consequences of humanity's actions on marine life.
Sketch 3.
The inspiration for this artwork comes from the garbage brought by humans, gradually destroying the underwater environment in a predatory manner, as well as harming marine life
Final Sketch
Improved point
What I improved in this final sketch is that I clearly clarified all the design principles since I received feedback from my lecturer. According to his opinion, my design principles were not very clear, and he hoped I could implement the design principles that I had learned in a more obvious way.

Rationale
The "Self-made trap" educational poster aligns closely with UNSDG Goal 14: Life below water, which aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources. Through its powerful imagery and messaging, the poster sheds light on the detrimental impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems, directly addressing targets under Goal 14 such as reducing marine pollution and protecting marine and coastal ecosystems. I hope people who see this poster can gain awareness of Marine Pollution. I try to express through this poster is that when humans excessively destroy the underwater ecology, they ultimately face repercussions. When humans exploit the ocean for their own interests, they cause environmental destruction, forcing fish to live among garbage. In the end, humans who lose this vital resource will reap what they sow. In this educational poster, there are Movement, alignment, Word and Image, and Contrast, which are design principles. Movement is depicted through the moving garbage fish, alignment is achieved by symmetrically placing the garbage fish on both sides, Word and Image are represented by the words in the corner, and Contrast in color is also utilized in this poster
Reflection
In this reflection, I will share my experience working on Task 03: Design within the Design Principle module. This assignment aimed to create a design piece influenced by our analysis of a previous work or as a reaction to it. Throughout this reflection, I'll delve into my approach to the task, reflect on the lessons learned, and identify areas for improvement.
For Task 03, I was tasked with crafting a design piece. To begin, I sketched several concepts before transitioning to the digital phase. During this process, I encountered significant challenges, particularly when digitalizing my work, especially with regards to coloring and layout. As someone with minimal experience in this field, I felt overwhelmed and unsure how to proceed.
However, through research and feedback from my teachers, I gradually gained clarity on the direction I wanted to pursue. Drawing upon skills learned in the Illustration and Visual Narrative course from the previous semester, I created an educational poster using Adobe Illustrator (AI) technology. Despite encountering setbacks along the way, I ultimately managed to complete the assignment successfully. Reflecting on the final product, I feel satisfied knowing that I put forth my best effort in its creation.
Further Reading
Breaking Down the Principles Of Design
In the duration of the third task, I selected this "further reading" because I realized that I still don't have a deep understanding of design principles. So, I searched online and read various materials and related books to gain more insight. Among them, I came across this article online, which I found very beneficial.
- 12 key principles of design: contrast, balance, emphasis, proportion, hierarchy, repetition, rhythm, pattern, white space, movement, variety, and unity.
- These principles work together to create visually appealing and functional designs.
- Understanding how the principles support, reinforce, or contrast with each other is crucial for expert designers.
- Examples illustrate how principles are implemented, such as using contrast for emphasis and repetition for unity.
- Combining multiple principles enhances design quality; most successful designs incorporate at least half of these elements.
- Examples demonstrate effective utilization of principles like contrast, repetition, and proportion.
- Designers may unconsciously follow these principles, or consult them to solve design challenges.
- Understanding how design elements and principles interact is essential for both novice and expert designers.
- Intentional application of principles is key to creating visually appealing and functional designs.
