Lecture Week 6

Summary of Week6

During this week's lecture, Mr. Hafiz delved into composition theory, specifically focusing on the concept of perspective. Perspective in art involves the skill of depicting three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface in a way that accurately conveys their height, width, depth, and relative positioning. Mr. Hafiz outlined several constructive perspectives, including:

-One-point Perspective
-Two-point Perspective
-Three-point Perspective
-Isometric Grid
-Dynamic Application

Summary of Week

Mr. Hafiz outlined our upcoming assignment, centered around creating editorial illustrations based on urban legends. The assignment spans from week 6 to week 8 and involves thorough research on urban legends. Our task is to craft an editorial poster illustration capturing the decisive moment—the turning point or climax—of the chosen urban legend narrative. The assignment is structured into three acts:

First Acts
Set UP

This marks the beginning of the narrative, where the exposition provides background information on the plot, character histories, setting, and theme.

Second Acts
The Confrontation
Serving as the second turning point, this phase involves the "rising action." Characters attempt to resolve the central problem, often finding themselves in worse situations. Challenges arise either due to a lack of skills or the realization that they need to develop new ones, leading to character development and increased self-awareness.

Third Acts
Resolution
The third turning point is the climax, the scene or sequence intensifying the main tensions of the story. The dramatic question is answered, providing resolution and leaving characters, especially the hero, with a new understanding of themselves post-conflict.

Lecture Week 7

Summary of Week7

In the subsequent week, Mr. Hafiz instructed us on the composition theory, emphasizing the concept of planes, which consist of three distinct elements: foreground, middle-ground, and background

 Foreground: Proximity to the viewer
Middle-ground: Intermediate distance
Background: Distant from the viewer

Design flow involves skillfully organizing visual focus through the effective use of foreground, middle-ground, and background. It should also convey a sense of movement and rhythm in your design. A well-crafted design with good flow guides the viewer's eye seamlessly through the layout, influencing how they absorb the content. To illustrate these concepts, Mr. Hafiz shared a dark comedy animation short titled "The Soloists," created using 2D/CG by Gobelins (2021), during the lecture to enhance our understanding of the topic.

Lecture Week 9

Summary of Week 9

During the Week 9 lecture, we received guidance on animation techniques, particularly focusing on limited animation or animated gifs. This included three key concepts: secondary action, overlapping action, and follow-through.

Secondary action involves enhancing the main action by adding depth to character animation. It contributes to a more intricate and realistic portrayal by introducing additional dimensions to the animation. This technique effectively supplements and reinforces the primary action, introducing a series of connected actions that aesthetically unfold to underscore the impact of the main action. Typically, these secondary actions are minor and serve to support the main animation.

Assignment 1 Decisive Moment& Poster Animation Task 2 Exercise

The origin of Disneyland can be traced back to the early 1950s, driven by the creativity and vision of Walt Disney. Walt Disney, a successful animator, wanted to create a unique entertainment experience where people could personally experience the fantastical worlds he created in his animated films. For children, Disney represents an environment filled with fantasy and fairy-tale colors. There is a saying that every woman has a princess in her heart, and in their lives, they must bring the princess to a castle at least once. One version of the story goes that in 1983, Hong Kong Disneyland opened as the third Disneyland established by the Disney company. Today, there's an urban legend about the "Secrets on the Escape Route" at Disneyland, particularly in the "It's a Small World" ride.

This is a boat ride through a dark area where visitors can view hundreds of meticulously crafted animated doll figures. The urban legend revolves around a supposed incident where the ride malfunctioned, and staff guided visitors to evacuate using the escape route. Allegedly, a curious visitor couldn't resist looking up despite repeated warnings to keep their eyes on the ground, and what they saw was something unsettling. When the visitor ignored the warnings from the staff and looked up, he saw something unforgettable. He witnessed a doll character named Pinocchio hanging from the ceiling, looking terrifying. However, at the same time, he felt a strange sense of curiosity. After taking a photo, he began to investigate.

Through his investigation, it was revealed that a former employee of "It's a Small World" had been fired and subsequently committed suicide. The eerie coincidence was that the method of suicide was identical to the way Pinocchio was hanging. What's even more uncanny is that this employee's favorite character happened to be Pinocchio

Moodboard

For this assignment, initially, I was contemplating what colors to use to evoke a sense of horror in the background of my story. I started searching online for inspiration, and eventually, I came across images with a color theme reminiscent of hell (leaning towards a bluish tint). I found this color scheme particularly captivating, so I continued searching for more similar photos to use as references and to find additional colors that would suit my theme.

Need to focus more on the main character, make it smooth and more 3D

Reflection

From this assignment, I have identified several areas where I face challenges. For instance, I realized that I am not very familiar with the tools in Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. While using these two software, I found myself unfamiliar with many shortcuts, which led to spending more time searching for tools. Therefore, I have decided to improve in this aspect. Additionally, I find the functionality of layers confusing. At times, I place elements on the current layer that shouldn't be there. I hope to address and improve these issues before the next assignment. I have also acquired numerous valuable skills. For instance, I've learned how to quickly find references that suit my needs, sketch more efficiently, and digitize my drafts more rapidly.
